Teach English in China
Island TEFL, Teacher Placement Program A
China is a country on the move and its vibrant culture will leave you breathless! Teach English in China and immerse yourself in one of the most fascinating and fast changing countries on the planet, while at the same time making a positive difference to the lives of thousands of students. Teach English in China and begin an immensely enjoyable and rewarding experience.
There are more people learning English in China today than the total
population of English speakers in the U.S and the U.K combined. With
almost 1.5 billion inhabitants, China has emerged as the world's largest
potential market for just about anything - including English. Its
inclusion in 2002 into the WTO has finally confirmed its status as an
acknowledged player in the world's market place.
Few countries offer a safer working environment than China; few offer anywhere near the cultural, historical and geographical diversity. Prominent institutions like the British Council and the Voluntary Services Organization (VSO) are already running significant operations in China, while school chains such as Berlitz, EF and International House are moving in.
With China now engaged in huge levels of international trade, there is a great demand for Business English in the Chinese Commercial sector. Many companies are now setting up their own in-house English teaching programs and recruit either from the Ex-Pat community, or from overseas. English teachers from abroad are given one of two labels: 'Foreign Teacher' or 'Foreign Expert'. Foreign Teachers are university graduates under the age of 25, many of whom do not have accredited TESOL qualifications. Foreign Experts are experienced ESL/EFL teachers with an MA TESOL/TEFL/Applied Linguistics to their name.

TEFL/Liangban’s China Placement Program A and not going through an agent

this be possible?

The Island TEFL/Liangban combination has close ties with a large number of language schools and public schools across China. We understand fully what teachers and their parents, need, value and expect from a teaching placement, when looking to teach English in China. Nobody takes their fiduciary and moral responsibilities to their teachers more seriously than us. Some people may feel that we are obsessed with details and have control issues. We actually take that as a compliment. We rigorously screen our placement institutions and avoid the use of agents. This enables us to maintain high quality control standards and goes a long way to explaining why we can boast many major blue chip clients including English First, First Leap, Best Learning and Shane English Schools in China.
We also have teaching placement requests from many to language schools as well as from the more elite public schools and universities throughout China.

China Placement Program A: Teacher Videos & Testimonials
“Island TEFL/Liangban helped me look at several TEFL
schools in China to find the best fit for me. I then received help through
the interview and with contacting the company before getting to China. It
was a big move for me going to China but I got the help I needed!” –
"Life in China is great. Every day I spend hours teaching young students how to speak English, share, sing, laugh and grow. I came here to teach and I love it. Seriously, I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the help and guidance of the staff from Island TEFL/Liangban. They helped me each step of the way. I couldn't have done it alone. This has been the experience of a lifetime. I love China. I really love the culture here. I have made many friends from around the world. I have been able to experience the life and culture here too. It's going by fast. It's been amazing so far"! - Charles White, USA
China is amazing. I'm having a wonderful time here. Teaching children - has turned out to be much better than I imagined it would be. Teaching itself is so much fun because I can see them improving and that’s very rewarding. I like my neighborhood, and I love the food. I still love going into a new restaurant and pointing at something on the menu that I can now read (or rather, pronounce, but not understand), and ending up with something absurdly oversized, absurdly delicious, and absurdly cheap. I'm thrilled I signed up with Island TEFL/Liangban- your assistance resulted in my teaching in an awesome city that I would never have found on my own. I love it here"! – Pauline Wallis, Australia

Frequently Asked Questions
China Program A
I can’t wait for the next formal China Program A
start date, do you offer year round placement?
Yes, if your placement needs are more immediate and you are unable to participate in one of our formal program start dates we do offer year round placement opportunities. Please send your resume, recent photo, date of birth and your availability date to firstname.lastname@example.org for immediate consideration.
What kind of schools do you have?
We work with public schools and universities but most of our positions are in private language schools and centers located throughout China. The working conditions, salary and remuneration package are more attractive in the language centers. The students tend to be more motivated to learn and the class sizes are much smaller in language centers than in public schools.
What kind of qualifications or experience do I need?
The regulations are now tightening in China, and for many positions teachers need a university degree, a teaching certificate (CELTA, TESOL, TEFL, etc.) and some relevant teaching experience. However, we have some clients that are willing and able to accept new teachers that do not have a degree but have an internationally accredited, 120 hour TEFL/TESOL certification. The best thing to do is to get in touch with email@example.com to discuss your situation.
Where do teachers need to come from?
Most teachers come to us by the way of personal referral. Our teachers come from the following native English speaking countries: The UK and Ireland, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. We do occasionally interview and place non-native speaking teachers, however these teachers must be fluent or near fluent in English.
Are there any age limits?
Teachers are now not being offered new positions in China above the age of 60. However, all of our clients are asking that we do not send them candidates you are over 55. This essentially means that the age limit we can accept is between 23-55 years old.
What kind of things will be asked during the Skype interview?
The Skype interview is a two way process. It gives you the opportunity, to tell us what you are ideally looking for, to find out more about who we and what we can offer you. It is your chance to ask all the questions you will have about teaching in China. The process affords us the opportunity to begin to assess where your best placement opportunities are. If you are a new teacher, we might ask you the following questions. How did you get on during your TEFL course? Why you are looking to come to China? Where would you like to be placed? What age groups would you be comfortable teaching? If you have more experience, we might ask about the kind of students you have taught before and some classes that you think went well and others that went not so well.
When do your teaching positions become available? Have I missed the start of the semester?
We have well over a 100 private language schools, middle schools, high schools and universities all over China.
Public school positions only have jobs for teachers starting in September and February. These type of schools generally look for teachers between 30-90 days before the start of each semester in order to allow enough time to process visa documents. This means that if you are looking for a September start in a university, then the university will want to be speaking to you from May/June onwards. Private language centres don't have semesters, but have rolling course dates. This means that they hire throughout the year, either to replace a teacher moving on or because there is due to be an increase in student enrolment. Due largely to the winning formula of our popular teaching methodologies and the fact that we always try to match our teachers to the right position for them, rather than placing them in any position ,many of our private language school clients are experiencing tremendous growth. As they expand at current locations or into new territories our demand for qualified teachers grows. Basically, whenever you plan to come to China we will work with you to find the best placement that suits your preferences and requirements.
Who pays for me to come to China?
It is now very, very rare for schools to pay in advance and send a flight ticket for teachers to come to China. What all schools now do is to give teachers a 'contract completion bonus', which usually covers your return-flight costs.
Is housing included?
Universities, middle schools, high schools, etc., will provide simple housing free of charge to teachers. This free housing is often on the campus and is usually a one-bedroom apartment.
Private language centres which teach children usually offer free shared accommodation with another foreign teacher working at the school. You will have your own private bedroom in a fully-furnished, two-bedroom apartment.
Private language centres usually offer you a monthly housing allowance. Full assistance is given in helping you find your own apartment, so don't worry about that in any way. N.B. Please note that you may need to budget for up to three month’s upfront rent payment/commitment in China.
How long are contracts usually for?
We do offer some 6 months contracts but most of our contracts are now of 12 months duration.
Is China a safe place to Live?
Absolutely! Most, if not all teachers on our program and foreigners we come into contact with to agree that they feel far safer here in China than in cities in their own countries. You can go for a late night stroll through parks here in China with absolutely nothing to fear whatsoever. The people of China are warm and caring.
Petty crime obviously exists here but as long as you stay alert and vigilant you will hopefully never experience it. Authorities advise tourists and residents to take care of their belongings and beware of pickpockets especially on busses and in train stations.
What is the visa process?
We will work with your school will organise all the necessary papers needed to obtain a legal 1 year work (Z) visa for you. This process can take up to 5 weeks. The papers will then be sent to you. You have to take these papers, along with your passport, application form and any other required documentation (this varies from country to country, please check with your nearest Chinese embassy) to the Chinese embassy, where they will issue you with the Z visa within 1 week. Once it is stamped in to your passport you can enter China.
If you don’t have a B.A. degree the school will only be able to arrange an F visa for you rather than a Z visa, but you are still eligible to enter China and take up your placement.
What will my salary and benefits be:
English teacher salary in China with language school is very competitive and allows for a comfortable lifestyle. The monthly salary for our job openings is anything between 6,000 – 12,000 RMB (1,000 – 2,000 US dollars) per month. The exact amount is determined by which school you work for, the city you are based in and the number of years of previous teaching experience.
As the cost of living is significantly lower than that of the West, an English teachers’ salary goes a long way. Eating dinner at a local restaurant will typically cost between 15-30 RMB per person (roughly 2 – 4.50 US dollars) and most teachers find they can live easily on 100 RMB per day (15 USD). Cost of living in big cities like Beijing and Shanghai is slightly higher than smaller cities.
Typical benefits in China include:
Flight reimbursement on completion of the contract (12 month Contract)
Furnished apartment or monthly housing allowance
Legal ‘Z’ work visa & residence permit
Comprehensive health insurance
Performance related bonuses
Professional development & support
Mandarin Chinese lessons
I can’t speak Chinese, will that be a problem?
This is part of the experience of working in a different country. There may be lots of pointing and confusion along the way, but you’ll get by. Chinese people are very friendly and eager to help and learn English so you will quickly make friends here. There will always be willing people who are only too happy to help you in China.
Should I bring anything with me?
You could buy most things here in China but you may want to bring with you something which reminds you of home or things difficult to find here e.g. large sized shoes and clothing.
I have a question that is not covered above, who do I need to contact?
Please contact: firstname.lastname@example.org Skype: islandtefl
